PRE SEASON TRAINING STARTS THURSDAY 3 JUNE

The rugby Commitee met and decided to start pre season training on Thursday 3rd June at the Club from 6.30pm. Last year you showed immense commitment and this was reflected on the pitch, with your fitness. Numbers exceeded our expectations.

Next season is a massive challenge for the Club, not only for the 1sts but for the 2nd's, 3rd's, & 4th's, as they enter the newly formed Gloucestershire Reserve Leagues.

Don't wait until then, keep yourself fit, and hit the first session fighting.

The caoches are here for your benefit, so use them

Revised Date For AGM (now Tuesday 1 June 7pm prompt)

It has been proposed by the rugby committee that pre season training starts on Thursday 3 June 6.30pm. It therefore makes sense that before this, the Club has all the officers in place before this. Due to Dinner & Tour this is the best convenient date to hold it.

Please make every effort to attend and have your say in how the Club is run, and use your voting rights. Next year is going to be the most challenging on and off the field, so a strong committed Management team is required.

Why not consider taking a little responsibility on yourself (if you're not already part of the team). Last year, we split the Committee's down into smaller working parties, so below are the roles available outside of the Rugby Committee;

President
Chairman
Vice Chairman
Hon Secretary
Hon Treasurer
Treasury (Counting & Banking Cash)
Referees Co ordinator
Fixture Secretary
Membership/Subscriptions Secretary
Commercial Manager
Press Officer
Catering Manager
Webmaster
Rugby First administrator
Kit Shop Manager

or become part of the following teams;

Commercial
Social
Club Development

The more help the Club gets, the easier is it to Manage, so please seriously consider giving up a few hours a month to help your Club

Iain Pring
Chairman

Update On Court Hearing

After almost two years deliberating, we have now been awarded £27,771.29 and Louise has six months to pay this or face a fourteen month term in prison. If this happens she still has to repay the money awarded.

Whilst not received in our account yet, and although she still in effect owes us £19k, this will go a long way towards ensuring the Clubs development plans are met.

The last two years has put a lot of financial strain on the Club, and I thank you all for your continued support during these very difficult times. We will soon be able to put closure to this chapter, and look forward to more prosperous times on and off the field.

Chairman

Club Dinner Saturday 15 May 1pm for 2pm start

It's that time of year again, and remarkably the cost of a ticket remains £30.00 for non Vp's. (VP's free). Not bad for an excellent four course meal

Guest speaker is Graeme Beveridge an ex Scottich scrum half, and presently player coach at Old Reds. Our guests also include Tony Swash from the Referees Society, and John White from the Sunday Independent.

Dress code is strictly No 1's, and no jeans. Admittance by ticket only and no entrance on the day without one, as we have to book numbers with the caterers in advance.

Tickets should be available from this Saturday onwards. Please see either myself or Gerry Pearcey. (Even if you're a VP you still need a ticket).

Annuals

Yet again we find ourselves into November and there are still a number of players who have not paid their annuals for the season.

The club relies on this money to help keep the club running and so when you don't pay, everyone else loses out as we haven't the finances to improve our club.

It costs on average £6000 p/m to keep the club open so we need all the money we can get to keep it going!!

Its £40 for playing membership and £20 for social membership.

If you're having problems paying, please see your Club Chairman Iain Pring or Treasurer Dave "Granny" Shehan to discuss it, but please, don't plead poverty and then go and buy yourself a beer like some people do!!

Its YOUR club, use it or lose it!!!

ANNUALS

Sorry Guys, its that time of year, annuals must be fully paid by 31 August otherwise you will not be avaialable for selection. Rather than leave it to the last minute you can pay it in instalments if that makes it easier for you.

Alternatively, you can join the VP's as long as your first payment is credited by 1 September. The Club doesn't run by itself, so the sooner the better.

Cost is £40, £50 if paid after 31 August and again if you are late you will not be selected until you've paid

IMPORTANT WORKING PARTY SATURDAY 1 AUGUST

Please spare a few hours starting at 9am, we need to clear the changing rooms & paint them, tidy up the big container, give the clubhouse a clean, and spend some time on the second team pitch.

Shouldn't take long it lots turn up. A few free pints afterwards and a bbq if the weather is good. It coincides with a three quarters training session between 11am and 12, so do both or if you're a forward, just help at the Club.

It's essential that we project the right image on and off the field so please spare a few hours and help your Club, and don't rely on the same old few.
You're commitment to the season is also off the field too.

See you there

AGM Reminder (IMPORTANT)

Just a quick reminder that the AGM is upon us (Monday 22 June 7.00pm).
Please give up a couple of hours of your time to attend and vote. The season ahead provides Whitehall with a massive challenge and needs to have committed people in every role.

This year there are three nominations for Club Captain, all creditable nominees. Be there and vote forthe person you think that will lead Whitehall to success on the field, and continue the great Club spirit we have off the field.

There will be a small buffet afterwards, so plaese make an effort to turn up, and if you feel that you would like to help in any capacity, step forward. We can never have too many helpers.

See you on 22nd

******SELECTION POLICY******

THIS IS A DRAFT COPY OF THIS SEASONS SELECTION POLICY.

FEEDBACK IS WELCOME.

Selection Matters (Overview):
The Selection Committee meets each Tuesday evening, prior to training, to consider which players should play in which team for the following weekend’s games.
This committee comprises the DOR (Director of rugby), Club Captain, all the team managers, and the head coach.
On certain occasions, others may be asked to step in should an individual not be available for the selection decision process.
All managers, coaches and the Club Captain have voting rights on the selection committee.
Preparation for club games can only effectively be done at the club’s training sessions. It therefore follows that, if we want to be able to compete at a higher level, our players, and particularly the first team, must be regular in their attendance at all training sessions.
They must become familiar with team tactics, plays and strategies – and also with playing alongside one another.

Attendance Record:
Proposed attendance is stated as follows:
• First team: If you are planning on being part of the first team squad you will be expected to attend a minimum of 3 out of 4 (75%) of the previous practice sessions prior to match day.

• Second team: Whilst no specific attendance criteria has been put in place for the Second team, it is expected that as a feeder team for the firsts, that players will attempt to also attend 3 out of 4 sessions so they are also available for selection for the 1’s. Additionally managers are in a better position to pick players who have attended training as this gives them an opportunity to view commitment, and skills.

• Third team: Whilst no specific attendance criteria has been put in place for the 3rds team, managers are in a better position to pick players who have attended training as this gives them an opportunity to view commitment, and skills.

An attendance record will be kept for all training sessions in order to help managers make selection decisions based on who attends.
Attendance to training is viewed as a commitment on your behalf and this forms the basis of selection.
The management and coaches need to be able to assess players at training in order to pick the best teams week in week out.

Skill during training and games
It goes without saying that the managers would like to pick the most able teams in order to get the job done over the weekends. Clearly some players are more skilled than others and accordingly this will be taken into account by management.
Having said this, attendance to training will be the overriding factor when it comes to making decisions as to who should play in the various teams.
The management are firm in their decision that players need to train together in order to succeed on the pitch.

First Team Squad System:
The club would like to be in a position where it can cater for both the social player and the more committed player who wishes to take their rugby more seriously. By the establishing of a squad, this can address certain issues such as:
A. The need for key players at training: It is difficult to practice line-outs, scrums, set pieces without these players.
B. The need for familiarity with the players who you will be playing with on a Saturday:
C. The system will also boost healthy competition for team spots.

With this in mind the following squad system will take effect:

Proposed First team selection policy:
1. All playing members asked if they intend to play first team rugby this season. To be able to put their name forward they must intend to adhere to points outlined below:

A. To be able to attend training at least 3 training sessions out of the last 4 (75%) at any given point.
B. If not able to attend training, a phone call or email to the first team manager should be made. (preferably by midday)
C. When in attendance at training, players will fill in the training register.

D. To declare match day availability by Monday evening in order that initial selection can take place before training Tuesday.

E. If for any reason a player might have to pull out of the match day squad, they should contact the team manager by phone as soon as possible. Do not send a text message for this purpose – make the call.

F. Players can drop in or out of this squad at any time, but obviously team achievement would benefit from a more consistent fifteen on the pitch.

G. Please note: If a player makes themselves available for the first team squad but should not make the first team squad they are still able to play for any of the other teams.

2. Any unforeseen forced break in selection policy will be explained and justified to the players involved and the teams. All communication must be directed through the DOR who will explain any unforeseen changes. Any suggestions, comments or disagreements with selection must also be directed to the DOR.

A. Poor training attendance means being dropped from the first team squad system.

B. Poor communication with manager regarding not being able to attend training means being dropped to the bench.

C. Poor communication/reason concerning dropping out of match day squad would mean being completely excluded from match day squad for the following game.

D. Failing to fill in the training register would simply mean the player would not be credited for attending training.

E. Failing to answer availability on time would mean selection might not know the player is available and the selection committee needs to potentially resort to other players outside of the squad. (If a player wants to play we need to know about it).

Everyone in the first’s squad must know and understand all of these selection criteria.
Please note: As far as possible the management and coaching team will adhere to all outlined selection criteria.
If however in the event of unforeseen circumstances the management need to break with this, all will be explained, and as far as possible, all will be transparent to all members and players.
Again a reminder that all communication must be directed through the DOR who will make the explanation.
Any suggestions, comments or disagreements with selection must also be directed to the DOR and not to individual team managers or coaches.
In return the management shall:

1. Stick to selection policy (please see point 1.A. above.

2. Match day resources shall be extensive and maintained through out season from a full medical kit, Crash pads to other items such as strapping tape.

3. Have a direct say in how the team is trained and making sure training is relevant to the needs of the team.

4. To work towards the club adding to, and improving training facilities.

5. To make communication between management and players a high priority.

6. Match day transport, travel and meet to be well organised.

First team squad Q and A:
Q: Why has a first team squad system been proposed?
A: To allow the club to cater for both the more serious player who wants to make a commitment to training as well as those that are happy to play more social rugby for the one of the other teams.

Q: Does this mean that the first team squad will be treated differently at training?
A: Not at all. There will be times when the squad will look to do drills such as line-outs etc as a squad so that they can prepare with the players that they will be playing with on a Saturday. All other training given will however be identical.

Q: If I put my name down to be a part of the squad what am I committing to?
A: It means that you have made a commitment to turn out at training as specified and provided that you are eligible on all other accounts, will be seen as available for the first team games.

Q: Can I drop out of this squad if I am unhappy?
A: Absolutely. There is no requirement to stay on should you wish to play more social rugby or are struggling to make the necessary commitment.

Q: If I make myself available for the squad but do not get picked for a game does that mean I don’t play on a weekend?
A: No, you are still eligible for any of the other teams. It has and will continue to be the case that everyone that makes themselves available will be entitled to a game or part of a game.

Q: What happens if no one from the squad is available for a certain position e.g. a prop?
A: The management will resort to seeking players from outside of those that have committed to the squad.

Q: Will this not split the club in 2?
A: It is not the intention of the squad system to split the club in any way. As with many sports clubs, we recognise that the needs of different players differ and we aim to give each player the opportunity to play at a level of commitment which suits them. The 1st Team Squad System simply allows those that want to take it all more seriously to make that commitment to each other and to help the club continue to grow and progress up the league structure. In no way is this intended to divide the club in any way.

PRE SEASON TRIALS

Wayne has arranged three pre season trial matches;

Saturday 22 August home to Kingswood 2 pm start, this is a club trial everyone is welcome and will get a game

Wednesday 26 August away to Harlequins, this will be essentially a selected squad, but dont be preturbed if you're not invited, it doesn't mean you're not part of the First team plans.

Saturday 29 August, away to Wells, again this will be a selected squad as above.

Please try and keep these dates free in your diary

2nd XV Merit table 2008/09

Final positions:

1 Avonmouth
2. Dings III
3. North Bristol
4. University of Bristol
5. Whitehall
6. Clifton Bandits
7. Barton Hill
8. Thornbury
9. Chepstow
10. Caldicot

A very credible 5th in view of the number of players used and the disruption it caused. Narrow losses in games we should have won against Avonmouth and Dings, never played the Uni and beat North Bristol, albeit in a friendly. Good to finish above Clifton, Barts and Thornbury after comprehensive victories away at Clifton & Thornbury. Away losses at Chepstow (despite a cameo performance from the Chairman, on and off the pitch) & Caldicot (where ill discipline cost us - sorry Alan but its true).

If only we had not left it until after Christmas to start "playing".

With Scotty's fitness sessions now, we should hit the ground running in September and regain the crown.

Chepstow & Caldicot are relegated and we "welcome" Cleve III and Southmead into our league.

DAMAGE TO GERRY PEARCEYS CAR

During the course of Saturday vening, damage was caused to the bonnet of Gerry's car. It appears that someone has jumped across it and dented it. or someone has sat on the bonnet.

I would very much appreciate if the person responsible or anyone has any information, they could contact me on 07838161139.

Macarthur's are looking at the CCTV coverage for Saturday to assist.

Many thanks

Numbers are tight this year, so if you haven't confirmed you are coming please do not turn up on the day as you might be disappointed. If you have committed to pay, and not yet paid, you will be expected to pay if you don't attend.

Any queries regarding the dinner please can you contact Gerry Pearcey 07798727384 as I will be abroad on business until Thursday evening.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

AGM Monday 22 June 7.00pm

Please make an effort not only to attend this important event, but seriously consider standing for a position of responsibility. For the Club to run successfully, if requires more than the usual half a dozen people that do 90% ofthe work.

I am particularly looking to the under 25's to become more actively involved. If you stand as an ordinary member you will be given a task to manage for the year.

It's encouraging that there are a number of nominations for the First Team. Next year is a massive challenge for the Club, and it needs a strong management team both on the field and off, to make this challenge successful.

There are new positions this year, a social, commercial, and facilities development, don't be frightened, all the necessary support and help will be given, and this will take a massive burden off of the existing Committee.

Thank you to everyone that has put their name on the boardso far.

********NEW COACHES*************

I am pleased to announce that Whitehall have secured the services of Dave Pike & Pete Polledri for next season.

I sincerely hope that ALL players give them their full support throughout the season as we strive to gain promotion, and win the second & third XV merit tables.

The major stumbling block was commitment, and Dave has asked me to reiterate, that if numbers at training start to drop, they will walk away from the Club.

Support your Coaches, your Club and each other.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Training

We are very close to finalising the coaches for next season, and in the interim period, Scott (physio) has kindly offered to conduct a four week 'All Black' training camp.

This starts with a bleep test next Wednesday 29 April 6.30 for a quick warm up, starting promptly at 7pm. Your fitness levels will be assessed and this will be repeated 4 weeks after (27 May) to compare. He will give you all personal fitness plans to use outside the training sessions, and remember training once a week will not get you

THE NEW WHITEHALL

Many thanks to all of you who attended last evenings players meeting, and those who text Wayne with their apologies. I appreciate it was short notice but required.

I'm also pleased that unanomously you all want success at the Club, and last night could be a important date in the history of Whitehall. This is the dawn of the new Whitehall, where tradition is thrown out of the window and the Club moves forward both on and off the field.

Our goals for the Season 2009/10;

1st XV Win the Gloucester Premier League
2nd XV Win the Merit table
3rd XV Win the Merit table

We have in you the quality players to achieve these goals, so lets all of us give 100% effort and support, and have a bloody good season.

We will succeed

DECISION TIME

As another disappointing season nears the end, you need to look at each other and ask the question ‘did I give it my best shot, could I have done better?’. I think if most of you’re honest, the answer is no. We have again invested in an excellent coach, and more recently, an excellent physio, my thanks go out to Dean, and Scott. Dean has given a lot of thought to keep the training sessions varied, enjoyable and beneficial, but this is wasted when six turn up for training.

I appreciate that training facilities aren’t the best (but far from the worst), we will invest iof the commitment is shown, in better facilities, and as the Committee attempt to put a structure in place for next season, one consideration is do we continue to invest in a coach & or physio? Dean is stepping down at the end of the season, as he will shortly be a daddy, and I hope every one of you thank him for his energy and commitment to get us out of the Gloucester Premier League, and look him in the eye and decide, did you give him your best? As players, where do you want to be in say three years time? Are you all happy no matter if what team you’re in, playing at this level. From a first team perspective is Gloucester Prem where you want to be, or is there ambition out there to say go for South West Two. The league we’re in is a tough one to get out of, and next season offers us the best chance, with no sides being relegated from Western Counties. This leaves, us, Cirencester and Old Richians, who we both beat home and away, possibly Matson and Saracens to fight for two places. We’re surely the pick of the bunch.

Have you got the desire to want to win every game, and feel gutted if you lose. Too many times this season, I have seen players laughing and joking immediately after we have just lost a game we should have won. Isn’u winning everything? This goes back to my earlier point, what level to you want to play at. To succeed you need to train regularly, no matter which team you are playing for and put pressure on yours peers that let you down. I am talking to Pete Polledri, ex Bristol, & his associate Dave Pike who have had long stints coaching both at Clifton and & St Marys. Whilst budget is an issue, can we afford them, the biggest stalling block at present, is raised by them, and what commitment they will get from the players. They will be watching the home game against Saracens, and have a look around, and meet as many people as possible.

The week following, I will be calling a players meeting, with Pete & Dave attending so they can meet you all, give you their vision, and explain what they expect from all of you. They are keen to get the U17s and older, closely involved with the seniors, and already half a dozen of this years U17’s have played senior rugby. There is a lot of talent coming through, so it’s important we keep them and develop them into better players. They will enhance, the quality players we already have, that maybe are under achieving. You all have a fortnight to decide the clubs future. If you’re happy staying in the comfort zone of the Gloucester Prem, we don’t need to pay a coach, the captains, vice captains etc can take training as we are highly unlikely to ever get relegated. OR do we want success? It’s been great that in particular Matt Stone has returned back to Whitehall, and Paul & Rob Ford I believe intend to play regularly next year. I have stressed to Pete & Dave, that we don’t want a lot of outsiders coming to join Whitehall to gain success. We already have enough talent to get out of this league, you are quality players.

I am happy to invest the Clubs money into being successful, but it’s only you that can make this ambition reality. We can achieve success, and have the quality in you to do this, maybe just need to bring the best out of you. Support your captain, vice captain, coach and team mates. Although I’m an outsider, and not Whitehall through and through, I hate losing, and hate Whitehall losing at any level. It eats away at me for a long time after the final whistle, I’m a bad loser.

SO WHERE DO WE GO NEXT SEASON, IT’S UP TO YOU. I hope you all attend the meeting, probably Wednesday 7 April, so keep your diary free and if you want success, give Pete & Dave your support, and commitment.

Enough said, I want to wear my Whitehall clothes, proud and in the knowledge that we are one of the best sides in the Combination. My sincere thanks to Dean, Wayne, Jon, all the captains and vice captains, managers etc and to Scott, for their commitment. We are one of the best sides in the clubhouse, lets replicate this on the pitch.

South West Two here we come!!!!!! Or Gloucester Prem we remain?

COLIN DICKS RESIGNATION

It's always bad news when an officer of the Club, feels that they cannot continue their role, and having had a long conversation with Colin this afternoon, feel saddened that a member who has given up so much of his time has had enough. It's easy to take but a lot harder to give, whilst we all make mistakes let's not criticise when someone is giving their best.

Without going into the ins and outs of his decision, one that I respect, I do feel that we must all show a greater commitment to our Club, after all we're letting our mates down. There does seem to be an increasing number of Friday/Saturday cry offs, and this really does screw things up. Whilst the Third XV is probably never really written in stone until a Saturday morning, it really does make it difficult to rectify when people cry off late Friday, Saturday mornings.

If we can improve communications, both ways, things can only get better. If you are available and haven't heard by say Thursday, then contact someone and find out which team you're in. As a Club, I think we can improve how we communicate selection, information too. So it's a wake up call from us all.

I know we joke about 'Whitehall time', but when you're asked to meet at a certain time, be there at that time, I appreciate some of you might have commitments but give your captain the decency of informing him. Some of you are turning up thirty minutes or so late. A time is a time, please be there on time.

Colin needs some time away, but still intends to come back playing in a couple of weeks time, and who knows might reconsider. We as a Club have let Colin down, lets ensure it doesn't happen again and we all learn from this. In the interim, Ricky Kerr will take respon.sibility as Capatin, and Kevin Smith will continue as Second Team Manager.

Finally I'm sure I speak on behalf of everybody, I would like to thank Colin for dedicating a lot of his spare time, to the role especially during the long period last year, whilst unwell, and hope he will reconsider his decision in the not too distant future.

BIG HAND, QUICK CLAP, CHEESIE GRIN (CHEEEEEEEEEEEEESE!!!)

SUNDAY INDEPENDENT (LOCAL)

With immediate effect, a 'Combination Column' will be included in the above newspaper. The paper up to know has very much been a South West publication, and although I send in match reports, Bristol clubs have had little coverage.

It is being written by John White, who works with the Evening Post. It will initially be purely for Senior rugby (although in timed will include Juniors), and the intention is to keep abreast with what's going on in the Combination, rather than match reports, which will continue to be sent in as normal.

I will be sending in an update on Whitehall, (Development of facilities, new signings, etc., Dockers game for Martin) If you can think of a milestone or something of interest, or a piece on someone whose work or efforts go unnoticed or unthanked, let me know and I'll send it off.

New Signings

I am pleased to announce that ex players Matt Stone and Paul Ford have 'come back' to Whitehall, having played successfully for St Mary's in South West two.

In addition I am hopeful that both Rob Ford and first team centre Joe Phillips will also sign. This can only enhance our chances or gaining promotion back to Western Counties, if not this season, but be in a very serious position next season.

This will also increase competition for places, and hopefully improve the numbers for training.

Regards

Whitehall Vets - written by an anonymous spectator

As appears to be a common theme most weeks, more players said they were available than actually turned up to play. The starting XV was therefore:

1. Alan "loved up" Golding
2. Steve "old man" Lowden
3. Matt "don't piss on me" Stone
4. Ricky "I'm a first team player" Kerr
5. Kevin "this is not a comeback" Smith
6. Kane "I'm not a first team player" Thyer
7. Bryn "I don't moan" Channon
8. Dia "who the fuk is 27" Eaves
9. Craig "I should be a first team player" Taylor
10. Steve "I can't go to work as my missus won't let me drive" Price
11. Darren "did you see my try" Brown
12. Martin "I trained with Clifton" Mannix
13. Gaz "all night" Allen
14. Richard "it's easy on the wing" Haycock
15. Ian "don't let the ball bounce" Pring

The word legend is overused, but what other way is there to describe Dia Eaves? Encouraged to play by Craig Taylor so that he would not be the oldest player on the field (which is as regular an occurrence as rocking horse shit), Dia once again wore the myrtle and gold of Whitehall into battle. Once again bearing the scars, Dia retired from the field of play at half time to allow Paul "the organiser" Narain to play on the flank, rather than his favoured position of wing. An emotional moment in the changing room prior to the game as Kane pulled on a first team shirt for the first (and no doubt last) time. He had dreamed of this moment ever since Pat Clark first played for the first team, and his only regrets were that the shirt was dirty and it was not actually a first team game. This was also the first time Kane had been on a coach trip without being the only person on the coach trip, who has not played for the first team.

Prior to the kick off, Father Ryan Price blessed both sides and gave a poignant reading. Unlike Wales and their response to the NZ Haka, Old Richeans showed respect for what will no doubt be a tradition to be repeated in years to come.

Whitehall dominated the opening phases, but unfortunately could not turn the dominance into points. On a rare visit into Whitehall territory, the home side were able to score under the posts following some poor tackling by Whitehall. The try was converted.

Even allowing for Lowden and Stone, the visitors gave away 2 stone per man in the pack. Entering into the spirit of the game, Old Richeans agreed to the ringer Lowden playing, on the basis that although he is 28 he looks and plays like a 48 year old. Bring back the flying pig. The referee also entered into the spirit by awarding Lowden a try, even though he was held up 2 foot short of the line. The "try" was converted by Steve Price.

Unfortunately this was soon followed by further poor tackling by the visitors which resulted in a home try. Undaunted, Whitehall kept grafting and their persistence soon paid off. After 15 phases of play (or was it 2?), the ball was released to the backs, with Smith excellently linking up. Smith had the line at his mercy, but showed typical unselfishness in releasing the ball to enable Brown to go over unopposed in the corner. Half time, 12-12.

Whitehall appeared to relax a little in the second half, but stout defence and good reading of the game by full back Pring, ensured that Whitehall stayed in the game. Obviously genes that Nathan has not inherited. The scores remained level going into the last 10 minutes, which actually lasted 20 minutes. Further poor tackling enabled Old Richeans to score in the corner, with the conversion attempt going wide. Whitehall made every effort to snatch a win and after some good ruck ball, the ball was spun out wide. With their exceptional reading of the game, Kerr and Smith were well positioned on the wing to take advantage. Kerr got the ball and cut back inside. With an unopposed run to the line in front of him, he decided to pass to Smith, who had intelligently scissored outside. Unfortunately Smith's exceptional pace meant that he was in front when Kerr passed and the ball went to ground. Old Richeans kicked forward and it look like they would end up as winners.

Although his missus would not allow him to drive, Steve Price turned back the clock to the days when he was a winger and sprinted down the wing (in slow motion) to score in the corner. In his younger days he would have made it under the posts, but he also entered into the spirit by making the conversion attempt difficult so that the game finished at 17-17.

Any insomniacs who missed the life history of the ref in the clubhouse, please see Ricky, Kev or Martin who will be able to provide all of the details. Llanelli has never been the same since he retired from playing, but rugby's loss is the Mets gain.
